UNFILTERED Q&A: Evandro J Laurens

This week’s model pick of is the perfect candidate to close out the year. With the amazing cast of models, we’ve interviewed he was he represents so much of why this segment started.

Evandro J Laurens is the break out star of Versace’s Manifesto campaign, a campaign that has been a breath of fresh air with its message of  Unity and Strength. Evandro stood out to me and instantly gave me that essence of modelling that I haven’t seen since young Tyson Beckford, that sense of storytelling through that is rare to find. Ofcourse, I had to have him sit down with me and Lewis Magazine for the last ‘Unfiltered Q&A’ of 2017, this is what he had to say.

What’s your full name?

Evandro Johannes Laurens

Where are you from?

I’m from Amsterdam, The Netherlands but I was born in Suriname in the capital Paramaribo. Which is the country that my parents are from.

Ps: The smallest country in South America.

How would you describe yourself?

Young, not too wild and in love.

Humble enough to say that I’m nothing different from everyone else and at the same time unique because there will and can’t be someone like myself. Like there is no other person like you, the person in question that’s reading my interview! 😉

How and when did you get into modelling?

During my studies I was doing an internship for Zara back in my hometown and a photographer was really interested in me because of my appearance and said that I could easily become a model/mannequin.The same day I got a callback from an agency asking if I could come over to talk about working opportunities.

Till this day I still get ‘scouted’ often if i’m around in my hometown by a variety of agencies searching for models that fit my description.

After many attempts of people trying to get me into it I went to the agency a day after work and the rest is history. I haven’t even really started yet, because the best is yet to come.

What was your first modelling job?

The Axe ‘Find Yourself’ Campaign is the first job that I consider to be a real modelling job because of the impact it made on me and my life.To do a campaign straight away at the beginning of my “career'” is like a dream that you never had to come true. Since I was playing football at a high level to become a professional football player. It was good to do something like that because of the fact that I learned a lot about my work just because of that particular job.

How did it feel getting the Versace Manifesto campaign?

At first, I didn’t really know what to expect since Versace is one of the biggest high fashion brands in the world. I’m still really honoured to do a campaign for such a big brand and to be part of such an amazing experience with wonderful people. Working with people such as Art Director/Photographer Luca Finotti and Italian top model Federico Spinas is always a pleasure because they know what they want and are very experienced.

During the campaign I got the chance to show what kind of value I could be to the rest of the team, being aware of how to use my facial/physical expressions I got the chance to convert that into the campaign itself.

Simply beautiful to be part of such a journey of understanding what the values of everything around you are and the definition of them.

The V sign in the campaign resembles, a gesture of victory, an ever-powerful symbol of triumph and defeat, an icon of strength, and representation of the optimistic core values of the Versace house.

A manifestation of diversity, optimism and unity as victory.

Are there brands you haven’t worked with that you’d like to work with?

There are no brands I could think of but if there’s a story behind it which is real and inspirational it would be a great outcome of learning something about someone or something that’s good for yourself and the people around you!

Because I think educating one and another in every possible way could be an interesting and beautiful way to work and learn something at the same time. Knowledge is life, the things that matter to you as a person at least. 🙂

Is there a photographer you’d like to shoot with?

Not in particular! Every photographer with a great vision is more than welcomed.

What’s the most important thing to you?

Being aware of what’s happening so you don’t lose track of the world that’s changing very fast and everything around it.

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Amsterdam is my favourite since I grew up there the biggest part of my life. It is an amazing place to live or visit with all different nationalities and people from all over the world. Most of the people are very open-minded which is good for the development of a lot of things.

Who is someone that inspires you?

Micheal Jackson for example, because of the fact that he possibly was the best performer I ever saw. The impact he had on people is a thing I look up to. If you have the power to inspire people to get the best out of themselves you are more than truly amazing.

What’s your favourite song at the moment?

I’m not someone who has a favourite or feels like I should have one. What I hear and like is what I like. Since we go through a lot of changes and music changes as well. I would prefer the music of the 20th century over music in this century, the real artists!

What is something very little people know about you?

There are a lot of things that people don’t know about me which is not a problem but it makes a person very interesting. I’m just like every other person, the only difference between me and someone else is that in a certain way I have and for a long period had to do all the possible things you can think of by myself without the help of family like a normal human being in our society.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?

This is a question that is quite simple and at the same time very hard to say because you will never know where you will be in the future. I like to be in front of the camera and expressing myself with music is something that can possibly become a thing to pursue my dreams and one of them is to inspire people to get the best out of themselves or at least do something instead of nothing.

Where can people keep up with you and find your new work?

Mostly on Instagram/Facebook and elsewhere on the internet working with a various number of commercial companies or brands within (high) fashion industry. Most possible everywhere since I will start to make my own music soon!
